The longer I teach, the more common it seems for students to struggle with number sense. Although there are many contributing factors to this dilemma, it seems to come down to fewer encounters with numbers. As the holidays and winter breaks are quickly approaching I encourage you to ask your children to help you bake. Especially if you are increasing or decreasing a recipe. Have them look at store ads with you and ask them to find the new price when there is a percentage markdown or see if they can find the original price. Take them shopping, give them your budget and have them help you keep track of the money. Make time to play a game of cards or a classic board game like Monopoly, Trouble, Sorry, Yahtzee, or any other game you have around the house. Hopefully, these activities will not only bring about purposeful number practice but also some together time and a little healthy competition.
